Health & Fitness Program
In comparison with the general population, people with disabilities are more vulnerable to the debilitating effects of secondary health conditions, such as obesity, pain, social isolation, and depression. Yet, people with disabilities remain grossly underserved by community health and fitness programs, which are all too often ill-equipped to assist such individuals in achieving the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle.
As a Center for Independent Living, LIFE/RUN’s services are designed, directed and delivered by qualified individuals with disabilities, themselves. Given this unique capacity, Center staff can personally relate to the challenges of achieving a healthy lifestyle when faced with the lack of opportunity and motivation. This awareness has served as an impetus to LIFE/RUN’s goal to expand its own health and fitness program. Now a reality, the Larry C. Gardner Activity Center will be located in LIFE/RUN’s newly constructed facility. The Center will contain fully accessible exercise equipment and serve as a forum for social and recreational activities designed to promote the mental aspects of wellness, as well as encourage physical fitness and nutritional health.
Though LIFE/RUN will provide in-house activities accessible to program participants, individualized plans will be designed to include a combination of community and web-based health and fitness activities.
